Thank You to Our 2024 Summer Interns

Thank You to Our 2024 Summer Interns

At Fabric, we strive to fix healthcare’s capacity problem. In doing so, we work hard to improve accessibility and outcomes via our enablement platform. This summer, we extended the opportunity to five very talented college students. Throughout their respective interview process and internship, each intern demonstrated commitment to our values, goals, and a dedication to healthcare. To say we are impressed, is an understatement.

Our program is thoughtfully designed to educate, stimulate and develop future leaders.  Here, interns gain first-hand knowledge of our innovative industry, work on meaningful projects, and have opportunities to network with, and learn from, leaders throughout our organization.

As we close out the summer internship program and reflect on our interns’ impact, Fabric is beyond proud to have been part of our interns' professional and academic experience; one which we hope helps shape and guide their respective career trajectory. We know that these brilliant minds will be tomorrow’s leaders.

Here's a note from our interns in their own words:

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to intern with Fabric this summer. Over the past few weeks, I've had the chance to work on various projects, including assembling the first issue of our internal newsletter, analyzing the telehealth, payer, and employer competitor landscape following our recent MeMD acquisition, auditing client contracts to consolidate relevant information for the Finance and Customer teams to utilize, and learning about metrics and data analytics from the Product Team to better understand how we measure and improve our products.

One of my favorite aspects of interning on the Operations Team is the variety of projects I get to work on, which allows me to collaborate with different team members and develop new skills along the way. Each day brings something new, highlighting the dynamic environment of a fast-growing startup. I've thoroughly enjoyed every project, meeting, and interaction, from weekly check-ins with Brett, Mike, and Kevin to casual lunches with fellow interns and Fabric team members. The supportive team culture here at Fabric makes it easy to ask questions and seek help when needed. These past few weeks have flown by, and I am reminded daily of how thankful I am for this internship opportunity.

This summer, I have had the privilege of working with the clinical team. I’ve had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, including research on new protocols, SNOMED code mapping, data collection, and Clinical Guideline Documentation updates. Having this vast scope of work has allowed me to practice different skill sets (e.g., critical thinking, creativity, time management, etc.) and ensure that I always have a project to focus on if I hit an obstacle or need a break from a specific project. It has also made me feel as though I am contributing to Fabric’s mission in a variety of ways. As an intern, it can sometimes feel like the work you are doing is insignificant at the company, but I do not feel this way at Fabric. I am confident and thankful that my work on the clinical team is contributing to Fabric’s vision of seamless care.

My favorite part of working as a clinical intern has been the research of protocols for the Virtual Care Suite. I find this portion of my work to be particularly rewarding because it will help inform, educate, and instruct women on how to care for their health needs. My favorite part about working at Fabric would have to be the Lunch and Learns. I love hearing everyone’s presentations and learning about an aspect of virtual care that I am not familiar or well versed in.

I had the amazing opportunity to intern at Fabric this summer where joined the operations team under Brett Schnobrich and Mike Kosnik. During my time here, I worked on the first Fabric Newsletter and gained insights into business innovations and areas for market expansion. Along the way, I learned the frameworks and details of M&A deals and contracts, conducted market analyses within the ever changing landscape, and worked on plans for Fabric’s growth. My favorite part was working with my team and fellow intern, Shreya, on post-merger integration initiatives, including the latest acquisition of MeMD! Seeing business from this perspective was an incredible experience that allowed me to gain practical, hands-on knowledge.

Working with different groups within Fabric was a unique and enriching experience. It allowed me to learn about various aspects of the community and gain a deeper understanding of each team's mission and goals. Everyone I met and collaborated with was kind, energetic, and passionate about their work at Fabric. The other interns and I were quickly welcomed into the community, making us feel like we had always been part of the team. Also, during my time at Fabric, I was fortunate to enhance my hard skills in data analysis, project management, and research. Additionally, I developed my collaborative and problem-solving abilities within a supportive and enthusiastic environment. This experience has been instrumental in shaping my future aspirations, as I aim to balance business and medicine and make a positive impact on the world.

Reflecting on my work at Fabric this summer, I feel like it's flown by. I’ve had the privilege of developing and testing phases of our LLM AI chatbot, Clare, working to enhance user interaction and experience. One of the most engaging aspects of my role was conducting testing protocols to evaluate the chatbot’s functionality, accuracy, and user-friendliness across various scenarios. I researched different types of malicious queries used by competitors to attempt to break bots, as well as safety net prompts to protect against these threats. This involved fine-tuning and retesting our prompts for clients, allowing me to see the tangible impact of my work. Additionally, I helped expand our knowledge bank for Clare by developing and testing potential user questions, identifying areas for improvement.

One particularly exciting aspect of my work was reviewing real-life user queries. This allowed me to see how Clare was used in action and provided valuable insights into the questions that real users asked. The experience of integrating my efforts into the system and seeing the improvement in Clare’s responses after repeatedly tweaking her prompt and crawl was exceedingly rewarding and motivating. Overall, working at Fabric has been an incredible experience. I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to learn as much as I did about product development, testing environments, coding and code repositories, LLM APIs, and more. Seeing the tangible impact of my work and knowing I’ve contributed to enhancing our chatbot’s performance has made my time here truly unforgettable. The skills and knowledge I’ve gained will undoubtedly shape my future endeavors in the fields of AI, healthcare, and beyond.

Throughout my life, I have always maintained clear objectives. However, if someone had told me five years ago that I would be part of Fabric’s internship program in the People & Operations team, I would have never believed it. My initial plan was to pursue dance, and I had everything decided. But life takes unexpected turns, and here I am — working and learning alongside incredible individuals with diverse and fascinating life and professional experiences. My time on this team has exceeded all my expectations. I’ve had the opportunity to create a small space for myself within a company as extensive as Fabric. Connecting with all these people has taught me that curiosity is a valuable quality, and consistent passionate work and effort leads to great places and should be celebrated. Participating in various projects has broadened my perspective. Now, I understand that complexity across different areas is both interesting and effective. I owe this growth to everyone who has supported and taught me along this journey. The unique culture and values of Fabric have made this the best first experience I could have ever asked for.

To conclude, I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude. Working alongside everyone has been an incredible experience. Every single one of you inspires me every day. Thank you for creating this environment. I’m honored to be part of this remarkable team.

On behalf of the Fabric team, thank you for your contributions this summer. We know you’ll accomplish great things in your future scholastic and professional endeavors!
